How to Cool Your House Without Overworking Your AC

Published on Jul 6, 2022

It can be tempting to turn up the air conditioning during the humid summer months but there are a few ways to keep cool without overburdening your system. Here are a few ways to use your AC more efficiently and save on your energy bills.

  • Use Fans

Ceiling fans, tower fans, table fans, and even bathroom fans introduce fresh air into new areas of your home, and help circulate the cool air produced by your AC. For ceiling fans, set them to rotate counterclockwise. It pulls the hot air up and away from you and pushes the cool air down towards you.

  • Sleep with Silk

Silk protein is inherently insulating and temperature-regulating due to its cellular structure. Because of this, silk sheets are known for being cool and comfy to sleep on in the summer and warm and cozy in the winter.

  • Open Windows at Night

Take advantage of the cool summer evenings by opening the windows. This will allow cooler air to flow into the house, generating a cross-breeze and improving your sleep.

  • Close Blinds When It’s Sunny Out

Keep your blinds closed or your curtains drawn if your windows receive direct sunlight during the sunniest hours of the day. The sunlight will heat your home.

  • Grill More

Instead of using the stove and oven, which produces more heat in your house while it’s hot outdoors, head outside to the BBQ. If grilling isn’t an option, consider no-cook meals like gourmet salads, sandwiches, or cold soups.
